Former youth minister gets 90 days for abuse

A 56-year-old former traveling youth minister has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for sexual abuse of a minor.

In exchange for Daniel Savala’s guilty plea, the state dropped 10 other charges. He was sentenced Wednesday in Ketchikan Superior Court to two years in prison with all but 90 days suspended.

The Ketchikan Daily News reports Savala was accused of abusing teenage boys when he worked as a youth minister at Ketchikan’s Clover Pass Community Church from 1995 to 1997. His sentence length takes into account that the crime occurred before stricter sentencing guidelines were implement in 2006.

Savala’s lawyer says his client plans to relocate to another Southeast community after he’s released to minimize any contact with alleged victims.
