Tugboat remains stuck west of St. Michael
A tug boat remains grounded about two miles west of St. Michael.
According to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the tug boat grounded last Friday on a submerged reef. It was going from Nome to St. Michael when it grounded at low tide. Six-foot seas and strong winds pushed the tug boat further onto the rocks, where it remained Tuesday.
DEC says when the grounding happened the tug’s two crew members left in an emergency life raft, and were picked up by local residents and taken to the clinic.
DEC says no fuel spill has occurred. The Coast Guard and the St. Michael Village Police Officer are monitoring the situation. The plan is to pull together a salvage plan with the tug’s owner to allow lightering to begin.
